What to think about when designing your kitchen.

The basis of a functional and well put together kitchen or bathroom is good design and forethought. The planning stage is even more important and elemental than the installation. Below are some things we consider at Kitchen & Bath Plus when designing a kitchen.

Measurements

Accurate measurements and correct application of fillers in a kitchen will not only allow adjustments for irregularities commonly found in walls, but take into account the opening of cabinet doors in corners and around appliances. Not to mention a common mistake of having too much cabinet and not enough space! Using a professional designer as a tool to ensure a well thought out kitchen or bathroom will be well worth it for your long-term investment.

Lighting

A friend's kitchen ceiling is very high and not so easy to exchange the lightbulbs in since they have to bring in a tall ladder. For six months, the lightbulb over her kitchen sink was out. Actually, it was out when the moved in, so she never knew what it was like to have a light right there. Until one day, the light bulb was changed out and she realized what she wa missing! Not only did her sink area not look so dingy and dark anymore, but she was able to see what she was washing better and it lifted her mood in an area where she spends a lot of her time. Lighting makes a large difference in a space and needs to be placed well with natural light and flow in mind.

Storage

Everyone has those clunky appliances that we don't want to clutter the countertops but we need access to pull out. Selecting the right cabinets with useful interior storage options makes all the difference. I've known people to have plenty of cabinets in their kitchen but they cannot fit their large dishes or pressure cooker in, so clutter ensues. A great designer will find out your needs and make sure the kitchen cabinets are suitable for you! Do you need no shelves for large items, roll-out trays, a spice pull out so you don't dig in the back of the cabinet for the paprika? Why yes and thank you!

Counter Space

The kitchen is the hub of the home. A thoughtful countertop completes a kitchen not only in look but function. Do you need a large island? Bar top? What about adequate space next to the stove or in the place you will naturally mix all your ingredients? What about when you need more counter space but do not have enough square footage for it? A good design can take the smallest of spaces and make it optimal to get the most out of it.
