Farmhouse sinks have stolen the show lately and are a trend that is here to stay for quite a while. Not only are they stylish but they are more functional than regular sinks. To top it all off, you can find a wide selection at very reasonable prices!
So let's get to it. Here's some tips to keep in mind while you are shopping for your Farmhouse sink!
Consider the cabinet supporting your sink
Farmhouse sinks weigh more than you think it will. They need to be supported properly. If you are purchasing cabinets, be sure to get a cabinet made for a farmhouse sink. If you are keeping your existing cabinets but want to install a farmhouse sink, don't let the cabinet stop you. If you or someone in your family is handy, you may be able to modify your current cabinet. You can also call a carpenter who is experienced at custom cabinetry.
New Plumbing
Not all Farmhouse sinks are alike. They can be double-faced, single-faced, have one drain hole or two. Also, because they are one large piece, DIYers tend to think it will be easy to install. But most quickly find it is more difficult than they expected. Likeliness is, you need to plan for a plumber to come hook up your new plumbing for your sink. Plan for the cost and schedule them ahead of time so you will not have to wait for a functioning sink!
What material?
Farmhouse sinks come in several different materials including stainless steel, enameled cast iron, copper, fireclay, granite composite. Stainless steel is lighter, costs less, looks modern and holds up well. Enameled cast iron is solid, the old vintage way and made to withstand heavy pots and pans. Enameled steel looks just like enamaled iron but since steel is more flexible than iron, it can chip more easily. It is hard to tell the difference between enameled cast iron and enameled steel so be sure to do your due diligence when purchasing. Fireclay is not recommended for the kitchen due to durability. Copper is a gorgeous way to go if your kitchen style allows for it but be ready for the maintenance!
Get a pull down faucet
Because the sink is so large, food can easily get caught on the sides of the sink. Having a pull down faucet will help you easily and quickly be able to wash the food down your disposal.
Decide if you want a single or double bowl
Most Farmhouse sinks you see are a single bowl, allowing for easy washing and soaking but there are options for double depending on what you are looking for. Think about how you use your sink the most often and what would accomodate that.
